Checking in With George Jonson ’56

George Jonson ’56 had the opportunity to meet some Phis before attending OSU, so it was easy for him to feel right at home when he started in the fall. Three years in the service and 55 years of running his own practice later, he is still very involved in his community and family’s lives.

Generous Alumni Support Makes Renovations Possible

by Bruce Rothermund, Alumni Association President

The Ohio Zeta House Corporation spearheaded a major renovation project at the Chapter House this summer.  The total for the project was $150,000 with the funds coming from Nationals via a loan from the Palmer Fund and alumni donations.  Your generous contributions allowed us to give approximately $10,000 towards the total.

Jeff Dahl ’82: “Never lose focus on your family…”

With at least 20 members of his high school joining Ohio Zeta, Jeff Dahl ’82 knew that was the place he wanted to be. Jeff made many lifelong friends and memories and he still keeps in touch with several brothers and attends Buckeye games to this day. In fact, Jeff’s son will be hosting the upcoming OU-OSU tailgate party.

Robert Fincher ’74: “…many of my brothers inspired me to higher levels of motivation.”

Robert Fincher ’74 will be the first to admit that his time in Ohio Zeta Chapter helped him to mature and that his brothers helped to motivate him. He went on to own the Maytag distribution organization in Florida for a period and now is publisher and CEO of Sustainable Community Media.

Jeff Benzenberg ’04: “It’s like everything else in life: it is what you make it.”

After travelling more than 1,000 miles from his home in Texas to Ohio State, Jeff Benzenberg ’04 was looking for some new friends. What he found, though, was much more than that. Today, Jeff is in charge of marketing and design at eRetailing and admits that his success is partly due to his time in Ohio Zeta.

Ev Musser ’57: “Don’t Settle For Second Best”

A veteran of the Korean conflict, Brother Ev Musser ’57 didn’t join Ohio Zeta Chapter until he was 22. He quickly made up for lost time, however, and became close with the brothers (he even cooked them eggs every morning!) Since then, Ev started his own architectural firm, merged that firm with another company and raised a full family.

Tom Backhus ’70: “I Have a Good Life and I’m Happy!”

Brother Tom Backhus ’70 was heavily involved during his time at OSU, as he played football and was a member of Ohio Theta on top of his full class load. His years after graduation have been no different. Tom coached football for several years and then he and his wife created and owned their own entertainment facility. They still own a real estate company and run a non-profit football camp each summer.

Chapter House Improvements and Repairs—Summer 2016

The House Corporation has planned for a number of improvements to be made this coming summer to maintain a safe and refreshed facility.  The most significant items to be addressed include replacement of individual room doors and hallway fire doors, window repairs, dining room ceiling replacement, hallway and dining room lighting replacement, flooring repairs and parking lot repairs. These improvements, along with the recent renovation of the living room and outdoor patio area coordinated by the Chapter, are necessary to render a facility that will meet the core standards for OSU approved housing. Beginning with the 2016 fall semester, sophomore and freshman students must live in either university dorms or approved fraternity and sorority houses. It is of the utmost importance that we meet these standards as quickly as possible.

Happy Birthday to You!

Ohio Zeta Chapter would like to wish these brothers a very happy birthday:

John Spence—April 5, 1930
Silas Thimmes—April 4, 1936
Frederick Blesi—April 19, 1937
